The full Italie suite was assembled and revised between 1846 and 1849. The thematic material originated in Liszt's vocal setting (Tre sonetti di Petrarca, S. 270, composed 1838–1839 / rev. 1843–1844) and was first adapted for solo piano in 1843–1846 (S. 158/3 / LW A102/3) before being revised in 1846 into its standard catalogue form.
