Originally written for piano and orchestra/ensemble in 1940; adapted into a four-hand piano duet by Strayhorn and Duke Ellington around 1945–1946, with their first studio recording made on January 10, 1946. Also recorded and broadcast in duo form under the full/variant title Tonk [Pianistically Allied].
