Étude No. 2 was originally written in 1994 as part of an initial set of six études composed for conductor and pianist Dennis Russell Davies’s 50th birthday, which were subsequently renumbered as Études Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, and 10. The broader collection of 20 Études spans the composition period 1991/1994–2012.
