Schumann did not assign an opus number to the work during his lifetime. It is catalogued as WoO 22 (Kurt Hofmann & Sigrid Keil Werkverzeichnis) and WoO 2 (Margit L. McCorkle Thematisch-Bibliographisches Werkverzeichnis / Neue Schumann-Ausgabe). Schumann subsequently incorporated this movement into his Violin Sonata No. 3 in A minor.
