2013–2014. Authoritative sources vary slightly on the initial composition date. Her publisher, G. Schirmer / Wise Music Classical, catalogues the composition year as 2013, while the composer's official catalogue dates the original chamber orchestra version to 2014 (premiered in April 2014 by the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group). Mazzoli later expanded the work for full orchestra in 2016, with a further revision published in 2021.

c. 1936–1938. Sources record that Meeropol wrote the original text between 1936 and early 1937 (first published as a poem in January 1937 in The New York Teacher) and subsequently composed the musical setting between late 1937 and November 1938. (The work was later first recorded by Billie Holiday on April 20, 1939).
