c. 1717–1720. The autograph fair-copy score (D-B Mus.ms. Bach P 268) completed in Köthen bears the inscription 1720. While scholars generally date the composition of the set to his Köthen years (1717–1720), some thematic material across the collection may have originated during his earlier Weimar period (c. 1708–1717).
